an original gingerbread creation

Our girls have grown up thinking houses with yards were such a novelty, since they have lived in tall cement apartments since they can remember. So of course, we decided to create a different kind of Gingerbread Home this year....a high rise apartment building out of yummy graham crackers. It was so fun to see how high we could build it...well, until we had used almost 2 entire boxes!!

Can you see the awning we built too?

Here's a close up of the front door (dan yuan) and the short dog that our neighbor lady would take for a walk everyday (the green tootsie roll).  It was good to remember these little things together, and laugh about our memories of home.

And here is the demolition:
(which actually looks like many buildings in our city, and reminds us of our Ice Cream Factory that was officially demolished in February 2012.  sniff sniff.)

holiday crafting....

for the newest family member (cousin) ....due in Feb 2013!!

These are my new favorite crafty gifts.  I buy onesies at the 2nd hand store (nicer ones, of course) and create a fun felt character on the front.  I made some for a friend last summer, and I hope she enjoyed them.  I searched online for images & ideas -- while trying to stay neutral with the gender, since we are all going to be surprised with this soon-coming-miracle!!

I also made a bunch of these child-sized aprons for a certain birthday girls' party this month, and I got pretty fast at whipping these out -- so I made a few for gifts too.  These two were sent to cousins in Ohio!
The girls made these simple owl ornaments - even Sydney (5yrs) stitched her own!  I really love working with felt, as it holds its shape & position so well.  I love how they turned out!
These were made with dried pinwheel pasta and lots of glue!  ...then painted white and strung with some ribbon & beads.  Simple but fun!
Not sure if these are quite visible, but we just used a brown cardboard star (from the craft store) and used colorful tissue paper to paint on with glue/mod podge to cover the entire star.

So there you have it....some of the fun gifts & crafts we made this year!!

Jesse Tree part 2

Christmas crafting has come and gone in this house, but its been a good 4 weeks of sewing & such with the girls.  I attempted to make Jesse Tree ornaments last year and only finished about 10-15 of them.  This year, I added a few more to the collection, and I imagine I will finish them next year.  I never realized how intricate of a project I was undertaking, but I am having a great time piecing together each ornament and making it our own.  The kids really love hearing the stories & lessons along the way too, which is the MAIN reason I am making these!  This year the girls each took turns reading during our evening family time, which makes it even more sweet.  I love hearing them read aloud, and finding lessons we can learn from this rich Story!

Anyhow, here are the most recent additions to our tree:

Rahab & the spies

Ruth & Boaz

Jesse

Samuel

David - shepherd & king

Elijah

Daniel

Ezekiel - God's word is our food!

Isaiah

Zechariah & Elizabeth

Watching & Waiting

On the back of each circle of felt, I stitched the book & chapter of the reading for that day, which is what has taken me so long to complete these ornaments.  I really enjoy coming up with my own design for the front, but the tedious part of stitching words isn't my fave.  Anyhow, it has been so fun & therapeutic to make each of these in the evening after the girls are in bed.  I have about 6-7 more ornaments to complete this project, which I will hopefully attempt next Christmas (2013).

a special gift

Asia just finished a project she has been working on for a few weeks now, and she wanted to give it away to her buddy Andrew. That is why she chose this great brown yarn - since he likes darker colors. I had to take a picture of this since she is giving it away...like right now!! It's so wonderful to watch her create and share. She is always thinking of her friends, and I know she is going to miss them while we travel. She is such a compassionate & loving little girl, and very attached to her loved ones. I love that she is growing in generosity too.

She also attended her first "group sleepover" at her Finnish friends' homo where they meet for a crafty class each week. Our friend is so brave & energetic to take on four little girls for the night! She had them over for dinner, crafts, a movie, dessert & the sleepover, plus morning activities too. Asia had such a great time with her friends - and we are so thankful for these blessings in her life. It was truly international - Korean, Canadian, Finnish and American, plus 4 beloved baby-dolls. :)

October activities....

FALL 2010 Kindergarten Co-op is back in full swing! I have about 8 five-year-old's every Wednesday in our home for 2 hours of hands-on learning, and then 1 hour of Physical Education - outside! This is the most kids I have ever taught at one time - and its definitely full of energy! The kiddos look forward to Wednesdays so much - and they are so fun to be with! Asia attends her own Co-op with friends her age down the hall.

Here are some picts of activities & crafts this month of October:
(my kids only, for privacy sake)

Eden making "Grandma's Scones" - using math skills!
The kids made the snack this day...and it was yummy!

Learning about plants & how they grow: Dyed Celery!
Eden was so proud of her blue celery stalk. She even ate it for a snack!
She also planted a bean - and watched it grow!

Family sing-along & music nights:
Eden showing some interest in playing guitar!!

Baking some delicious Banana Muffins together!

Can we get any more excited about Leaf Prints?
(made from styrofoam, pencils & markers)

Making pumpkin masks!
(learning about mixing colors, painting, using scissors)
...and here's the whole gang!

We also made orange scented playdough!

It has been a very full month of crafts & fun group activities together. These international kids are so precious & I cherish the time I get to spend with them.

this made me smile....

...so maybe you will too!

Lately the girls just want scissors.....maybe some tape, or crayons too. Thankfully, they are finally at the age where I can trust them with scissors on their own, and usually I am so amazed by what they create. I love giving them a basket of supplies - and seeing what idea they come up with.

This is Sydney's version of a crown. Taped to her head! I love it. She even drew the diamonds, cut them out - and taped them in the precise place that she wanted them. Maybe only a mother can appreciate the details - but I wanted to point them out for those who just skim over like "no big deal." These are serious skills people!

She obviously needed a ring to go with.

What will she create next?

my first birthday cake with Chinese characters

I made a little cake for our sweet Aiyi (auntie) this year, complete with "Happy Birthday" in Chinese characters. I almost couldn't fit it on the cake...but I think she could read it!

ZHU 住 NI 你 SHENG 生 RI 日 KUAI 快 LE 乐!!
the writing starts on the top right side...and goes down & around!

I really like writing Chinese characters - it feels like artwork!!
Too bad I can't remember that many!!

crochet & crafts

A precious Finnish woman here in the city volunteered to offer a Crafty Class to the seven-and-up kids! Asia LOVES her class! She first learned to crochet with her fingers, and has now learned to use a crochet needle. Her teacher is also teaching them how to use a regular needle & thread, starting with beads. Every week Asia walks to class with her friend Emma - over to her apartment, and spends 2 hours being crafty!

I love helping Asia get ready for her class: helping pack her backpack with necessities so that she can walk there on her own, and come home after!! She has to take the elevator, open the big heavy metal door, walk down the street and through a neighborhood restaurant, down some big stairs, through another bunch of apartment buildings - and up five flights of stairs. And then she comes back the same way, using her very own key! Asia loves the feeling of going by herself (with Emma) - they feel so responsible and grown up. Its a big accomplishment for momma too, letting her little girl branch out like this. I know its safe...and it builds confidence in our baby girl. She is growing up!!

Here are a few pictures of some of her recent creations:

She crocheted a long strand of yarn, and wound it around a toilet paper tube, converting it into a little pencil holder! This was our anniversary gift. Then she made a purple & yellow lizard out of beads. Now she is working on a small table mat - sewing the edges with a needle & thread, and embroidering a flower too! Its so fun to see her try new things, and come home energized and enthusiastic about her new skills! I am so thankful for our Finnish friend - and her love for these girls. :)

And I LOVE my new pencil-holder-man, specially crafted by my sweetie.

feeling crafty: Father's day gifts!

I love hot glue guns! My friend just found one - and now we are gluing everything in sight. This past week, we bought some frames and rocks at the flower/fish market - to make some Father's Day gifts with our weekly 4-7 year old Children's Co-op! It was so fun and simple, that I wanted to share this idea, in case you want to make something fun for your favorite dad, or for yourselves!

Things you will need:
  • any size frame
  • hot glue gun
  • extra hot glue sticks?
  • rocks
We had each kid (6-7yrs) arrange their rocks beforehand, and then take turns gluing each rock in place along the frame. We found all colors and sizes of rocks, so the frames look so amazing! The mom's were in charge of the hot glue guns. Next week, each kid will make a matte that frames their picture, and write "Dad, you ROCK!" in their own printing. All the materials cost 12Y for each gift = $1.76!!

The younger kids (age 4-5) made a different style of frame using:
  • any size frame
  • Elmer's glue
  • coarse sand
  • shells and/or coral
  • small rocks
This frame will have a picture and matte, that says "Dad, you're COOL!" - to go along with the beachy theme. I also used clear nail polish to make the rocks shine! Anyhow - its always fun to decorate a frame!

p.s. It's been awhile, so we aren't really UP on all the new lingo - but the kids thought it was so funny learning what "cool" and "you rock" means. We are all so sheltered! We might need some help in this department soon.
